Miss Universe Philippines to Release World’s First Beauty Pageant NFTs

Have you heard of NFTs ? NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital assets that can represent a wide variety of real-world concepts such as ownership over one-of-a-kind art, videos, in-game items, and other collectibles.  NFTs can be used to represent items such as photos, videos, audio, and other types of digital files. These are bought and sold online, usually using cryptocurrency, and they are generally coded with the same software as cryptocurrencies.

The NFT trend has come to Miss Universe Philippines. RedFOX Labs, a Southeast Asian venture builder, has joined forces with Miss Universe Philippines in making history as the world’s first-ever beauty pageant to drop an NFT collection.

The Miss Universe-Philippines NFT collection will be released on September 24, 2021, and will be available for purchase using the RFOX token via MetaMask or Uniswap.

World Vision and ComCo SEA’s Cause Marketing for Good virtual conference helps MSMEs help themselves and others

More than a year into the COVID-19 pandemic and many businesses have closed down, leaving millions jobless. In the Philippines, with over 99% of businesses being micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurs have been hit especially hard. Many owners have tried to stay afloat to help their employees but the economic downturn has been too much for so many MSMEs. In spite of these, MSMEs recently came together for a greater cause – to help vulnerable communities, including themselves.

As part of their initiative to support MSMEs, global development and advocacy organization World Vision and regional integrated communications agency ComCo Southeast Asia held the Cause Marketing for Good Virtual Conference to give MSMEs the chance to do good for themselves and for others. Different experts from renowned brands and agencies around the country joined the event and shared information, experiences, and learnings about cause-related marketing or CRM to help equip MSMEs on how to champion social issues through their marketing efforts.

World Vision and ComCo Southeast Asia’s Cause Marketing for Good campaign aims to support and teach MSMEs how to make their businesses relevant through effective and sustainable cause-related marketing campaigns that can rally support from the public.

Netflix celebrates International Women’s Day and announces its investment in the next generation of female storytellers

March 8 of every year is International Women’s Day! On this day, we celebrate all women regardless of race, color, religion, educational attainment, job, economic status, or title.

In this light, Netflix is moving to invest in the next generation of female storyteller.  In her blog post, Netflix’s Global TV Head, Bela Bajaria, pointed out many firsts of women in the industry. She goes on to say that she wants to ensure that the next generation of female storytellers has more opportunities than those that came before her.

Bajaria recounts her own personal experience as an Indian woman growing up in the US. Despite the stereotype onscreen of a woman hero being a white woman, she said that in her mind, it wa always a “brown girl, with hopes and aspirations, strengths and talents just like her white counterparts.” Several years later, this dream became reality with Mindy Kaling in The Mindy Project, an American romantic comedy television series created by and starring Mindy Kaling, the daughter of Indian immigrants.

Since then, Netflix has had many firsts in front of, and behind, the cameras that involved women: the first Indigenous Mexican Academy Award actress nominee; the first Korean female stand-up special; the first Black woman to direct a superhero movie; and the first transgender woman to ink an overall deal with a studio.

Here is a  video put together by Netflix to celebrate women.

Netflix also announced a Netflix Fund for Creative Equity “which will invest $20 million a year for the next five years in building more inclusive pipelines behind the camera”. Some of the initial programs for women that Netflix will support around the world include:

  • Collectif 50/50, a year-long, national mentorship program for aspiring women creatives of various ages and backgrounds in France, including a series of masterclasses from 30 industry leaders.
  • Into the Wild, a one-year mentorship program for young female filmmakers from film schools across Germany, including a script writing camp and a final pitch at well-known German festivals including Filmfestival Munich and the Max Ophüls-Festival.
  • Women in Post, a new eight-month program that builds on the Netflix and Canadian Academy Directors Program for Women, will provide mentorship and training within post-production to women creatives from across Canada.
  • Narrative Short Film Incubator for Women of Color, an incubator program by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers for Latinx women and women of color to produce short film projects through dedicated funding, production support, and mentorship.

Join the Philippines’ first Filipino Family WellBeing Conference (FFWC)

The Filipino family has been extremely challenged during this COVID pandemic. Almost overnight, lives changed. Businesses closed down, some permanently. Many breadwinners lost their jobs or had to take a cut in pay. Children stopped schooling. And worse of all, many had to experience the loss of loved ones to the virus. It also did not help that even before the pandemic hit us, Taal Volcano erupted, causing suffering and affecting the lives of those in the surrounding areas.

According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 73.5% of Filipino households had at least one member of the family experience job loss or workload reduction. This resulted in financial instability, with 85% of households experiencing financial difficulty during the pandemic.

Let’s join Earth Hour 2019 and support awareness of the plastic pollution problem

2019 is the 12th year of Earth Hour but it is also the second year of its #Connect2Earth global theme which calls for an urgent need to care for the Earth’s biological diversity. Central to this theme is the continuing focus on the issue of single-use plastics.

What began in 2008 in Manila (Earth Hour first started in Sydney in 2007) as a campaign to create awareness of climate change has evolved into the world’s grassroots movement to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity as a viable resource link that families, communities, nations, and future generations all depend upon.
