Knorr’s Lutong Nanay Nutrition Program helps moms prepare more nutritious food for their families

There are at least 5 million malnourished children in the Philippines.

That was a statistic from the Food Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the DOST. Considering we are a population of about 100 million people, that is a scary 5% of the population that is not getting enough of the right nutrition. With children, malnutrition is especially critical because their brains and bodies are still developing and to lack the proper nutrients at this stage means they miss a very crucial window in their lives to develop to their full potential.

So it was quite inspiring to find out that Knorr was launching a Lutong Nanay Nutrition Program that aimed to make nutritious meals accessible for every child. The program is a 3-step model of Feed Teach and Make It Last.

Monggo goodness with Knorr pork cubes

Superfoods are now becoming popular among health buffs because of the extra boost in nutrients that they give. I’ve been buying chia seeds and quinoa for some time now to mix them in smoothies and other dishes. But frankly, I cannot buy these in large quantities because they are usually expensive and available only in select health stores and weekend markets.

But guess what! A childhood favorite, which is very inexpensive and locally grown, is also a superfood! MONGGO!

Knorr’s “Sarap ng #LutongNanay” Movement brings easy cooking back to homes

My Mom was a hands-on, stay-at-home Mom who knew how to cook and bake, sew, draw, play the piano, embroider, amd do oh so many things. Now that she has passed on, I remember her for all the things that she did for us as kids. And one of the things I truly remember (and miss a lot) is her home-cooked dishes.

When I went off to grad school in the States, the one thing she made sure I had with me was a box of her recipes so that I would not go hungry. That was typical Mom.  Memories of Mom washed over me during the Knorr #LutongNanay event I attended recently because everything about the event reminded me of things she used to do for us as kids. I listened to celebrity Moms talk about how some of them only learned to cook when they got married but that they now draw pleasure from cooking for their families.

World-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Stuart Firestein, PHD from Columbia University in New York confirmed that mom-cooked flavors actually activate memories because scents reach those parts of the brain that connect the familiar scents with past experiences with Mom. By leaving children with these wonderful flavor imprints in their brain, heart and soul, Moms leave wonderful memories up to their kids’ adulthood. Dr. Firestein says, “What continues to fascinate me is how the brain instinctively knows that certain flavors and foods have the power to mean more to us than just sustenance. This is called sensory recall and is a phenomenon which demonstrates how the brain is hard-wired to respond in certain ways to different tastes and smells. Even over time and distance, when we taste mom’s cooking, it transports us back to a special place and a unique memory”. So, so true…

Unfortunately, modern lifestyles have put pressure on young people. Compound that with the bane of Metro Manila traffic and you have single people, aged 23 to 27 roughly (and even older) who would rather go for fast food eating. As a result, many have admitted in a new research that they cannot cook.

Knorr’s #LutongNanay event was a way of showcasing so many ways to cook quick, uncomplicated dishes and we had a chance to experience just how quick it was! Here I am at Table No. 1 with Dimples Romano who shows us how to cook Tinola sa Gata.

Tinola sa Gata ingredients. They are all readily available.

Here’s Dimples whipping up Tinola sa Gata on our side of the room. It only took her a few minutes to cook this.

Later, I went around the other 3 tables checking what the other celebrity Mom-bassadors were whipping up. Here are the other dishes:

Here’s how to make the Tinola sa Gata:

I’ve been using Knorr products for a long time so am so relieved they have a #LutongNanay section on their website where I can go and check out easy-to-whip-up recipes. You can do the same.

Knorr’s Homecoming Treat for OFWs this Christmas

I remember when I lived abroad for 2 years while working on my Master’s. I sorely missed home. Filipino friends always took opportunities to get together and partake of Filipino food. But despite those get-togethers, being away from home meant missing a lot of familiar stuff. I particularly missed Christmas, seeing our native parols, being with the family for Noche Buena, hearing the Filipino Christmas carols and even the local food – Chinese ham, queso de bola, spaghetti, and native delicacies like puto bumbong and bibingka during Simbang Gabi.

So can you imagine what it must be like for returning OFWs who have been away from the Philippines for many more years, even decades? Can you imagine what it must be like for them to see Philippine soil from the air, excitedly looking through the windows as the plane prepares to land? Can you imagine their hearts longing to see their dear ones even as they collect their baggages from the carousel? And can you imagine them planning exactly what Filipino food they will indulge in while they are in the country, especially those which may not always be available abroad?

Knorr recently treated returning OFWs to a heartwarming homecoming treat with the homecooked goodness of sinigang. Instead of the usual salubongs of Filipino music playing from bands at arrival areas, the “Knorr Sinigang’s Umuwi sa Sarap ng Sinigang” campaign added a flavorful twist. Arriving OFWs at NAIA Terminal 3 were invited to a cozy dining area and were fed Filipino food like fish, pork and shrimp sinigang.

Some celebrities were at hand also to lend additional surprise. Singer Erik Santos gave his own rendition of “Pasko na Sinta Ko”. Marvin Agustin was also on hand as part of the cooking ensemble. And the OFWs were given special tokens and floral leis to complete the homecoming treat.
I think the gesture of Knorr meant a lot to those returning OFWs. After all, they are some of the heroes of this country. They sacrifice being away from loved ones, often live under very difficult circumstances, and send a significant part of their earnings home.
Tomorrow, my own daughter is coming home for the holidays. She has lived in a foreign land most of 2012 and will be with us just for 2 short weeks. But we intend to make the most of the time just being a family and bonding as much as we can – over food, of course. I also have my own homecoming treat for my girl which Knorr also sent over for me to try – several mixes including sinigang. She’ll have her share of native dishes, something she has not eaten since she left.
Finally, watch these videos of the actual Knorr Homecoming Treat right at the airport.
