DOH aims to eradicate tuberculosis through a multisectoral initiative

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic communicable disease that comes second only to COVID-19 as a leading cause of mortality from a single infectious organism. According to the Global TB Report 2022, the disease accounted for 1.6 million deaths in 2021. In a preliminary report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) this year, TB continues to rank 11th among the causes of death in the Filipino population.

CSMC’s latest webicon highlights DOH’s challenges and opportunities

In its latest webicon last September 9, Cardinal Santos Medical Center brought together medical professionals to discuss the different challenges and opportunities that the Department of Health (DOH) faces.

The panel of speakers consisted of former DOH Secretaries Dr. Esperanza I. Cabral and Dr. Manuel M. Dayrit, former DOH Undersecretary Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, and the current President of the Philippine Medical Association Dr. Minerva P. Calimag. The webicon was moderated by the President of the Philippine College of Physicians, Prof. Diana A. Payawal.

Meeting DOH Secretary Janette Garin up close

Knowing how busy Cabinet secretaries are, I accepted an invitation to be one of the bloggers to meet and greet Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette Garin. It was probably one of her last acts under the Aquino administration but it was good to know what health programs were carried out under her watch and which ones she will be endorsing to the incoming administration.
