Why I Don’t Leave Home Without my BDO Rewards Card

If you had a chance to peek into the contents of my wallet (don’t bother to count the money because I don’t put much in there), you’ll see all sorts of plastic cards. I have a credit card, grocery membership cards, a bookstore discount card, a drugstore loyalty card, cafe loyalty cards and ID cards. They are nice to have handy but there is one more card I won’t leave home without – my BDO Rewards card.

Look! I’ve been a BDO Rewards cardholder since June 2007!!! When I was asked to share about BDO Rewards, it really was no problem because I have been using it already for years.

My own BDO Rewards card (serial numbers erased for security)

I actually started out with an SM Advantage Card but switched to BDO Rewards. Both earn reward points but if you’re a Banco de Oro depositor like I am, the BDO Rewards card is actually the better option because you can rack up more points. I’ll tell you why.

Reason #1 – Different banking transactions count towards points

Different transactions with BDO earn points. Some other bank reward programs only earn you points when you make placements or add on to your existing bank accounts. With BDO Rewards, besides peso and dollar bank balances, points are awarded also for availing of consumer loans, using its electronic banking (online banking, phone banking and ATM) services, paying with its BDO Debit Card, credit-to-account remittances, and credit card transactions.

In fact, I don’t even have to do much to earn points. Even if I were to just maintain my balance, it would continue to earn monthly points if it met the minimum criteria. Of course, increasing my balance means greater points.

Read more details on how to earn points here.

Reason #2 – I don’t have to do anything to earn points

Just by leaving my bank accounts in BDO, I earn monthly points. I don’t even have to do anything actively. Points are awarded monthly depending on the level of one’s maintaining balance. In other words, it is a card that keeps on giving even if you do nothing.

Reason #3 – Purchasing from SM, SM partner stores and partner retailers earn points too

The BDO Rewards card works just like the SM Advantage card when used in SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, SM Hypermarket, SM retail establishments and other BDO Rewards partners. And it earns exactly the same way too.

Reason #4 – Every point is a peso

How many other cards do you have whose peso value equals the reward points? Not many. Most of those I know require several points to equal a peso. With BDO Rewards, 1 point = 1 peso.

Reason #5 – BDO Rewards surprises. And saves money.

Believe it or not, over the years I have already bought about 3 bags on sale and a couple of blouses with just my accumulated points. Whether you are shopping or doing banking transactions, you just keep racking up points you can use for free shopping.

If there is one very clear memory in my mind associated with BDO Rewards, it had to do with my Mom. It is a precious memory because she already passed away last year in November. A few months before that, I think in celebration of Mother’s Day, I took her to Megamall. She was just accompanying me as I bought a few things I needed in the department store. Our plan was really just to have lunch and bond. But while there, I realized I had enough points accumulated. Because of BDO Rewards, I was able to give my Mom a nice new bag. FREE!

3 Tiers for BDO Rewards Cards

There are 3 different card types or tiers, depending on how many points you earn within a 2-year period.

Emerald: below 5,000 points
Sapphire: 5,000 to 9,999 points
Diamond: 10,000 points and above

The higher your tier, the more perks and privileges that go with the card.

Because I can earn reward points in many places I frequent, the BDO Rewards card never leaves my wallet. Reward points can be used to pay for purchases at any branch of the SM Store, SM Supermarket, SM Hypermarket as well as SM retail establishments such as Watsons, Toy Kingdom, Ace Hardware, Surplus Shop, SM Appliance Center and more.

If you’re already a BDO depositor, ask your branch for details on how to get the BDO Rewards card.

A Spa-rty with SoMoms at The Nail Room Libis

ME time is special because that is the time I get to myself. On those days, I treasure a trip to a nearby salon or spa for my mani-pedi or a hair trim. But what could be better than having a spa-rty session with my SoMoms friends upon the invitation of Janine Go and Jay Tiu of The Nail Room at Libis!

It is located right beside Nuat Thai Libis (owned also by Janine and Jay). Two years ago, some of my mommy friends and I spent a wonderful afternoon having foot and body massage treatments at Nuat Thai.

Read about my Nuat Thai Libis experience here.

A delightful food spread met us as we opened the door – a truly gastronomic delight because I thought we’d just have simple food and drinks.

Only the best brands of nail polish are used at The Nail Room. I specifically noticed that they had Chanel and Orly, popular nail polish brands that not only harden fast but also leave an evenly coated look and last longer on the nails without chipping.

The Nail Room can accommodate 9 people at one time. Each upholstered couch is wide enough to move around in, has its own cushy pillows, its own footstool and printed towel. Right underneath the footstool, hidden from view, are the foot sinks where our feet are washed.

We started off with a really great foot scrub, complete with a pasty, minty white exfoliating substance applied on the lower legs to remove old skin. And while the attendant was doing that, we were enjoying a glass of bubbly (but non-alcoholic) drink with a nice touch of Maraschino cherry at the bottom. Oh gosh, this is the life!

Exfoliating Paste

My ‘foamy white’ legs being exfoliated

Ahhh this was so good! I had two glasses…

See why we are called Social Media Moms (SoMoms)?

With the two SoMoms on my side of the room, Noemi and Patty

Now came the hard part — what nail polish color to choose? It was made harder by the sheer number I had to choose from — 3 palettes!

Two of the three nail palettes

But finally, after listening to my SoMoms’ advice, I went for the Chanel brand and chose a rose pink shade. And here I am with 3 of my SoMoms and the final product of our afternoon at The Nail Room (my feet are at 6 o’clock). So happy with the color and the service!

4 pairs of pretty feet

To give you an idea of prices, here are some of them:

Manicure: PhP 160
Pedicure: PhP 180
Spa Manicure: PhP 300
Spa Pedicure: PhP 380
Deluxe Foot Spa: PhP 280
Paraffin Treatment: PhP 560 for hand; PhP 600 for foot
Add PhP for an Orly nail polish and PhP 100 for a Chanel nail polish. Add only PhP 80 to change polish.
They even offer mini manicure (PhP 120) and pedicure (PhP 150) for kids 12 years and below. So kikay!

Thank you once again, Janine and Jay, for a wonderful afternoon at The Nail Room. I am definitely going back!!!

Be bitten by the travel and cultural bug! BPI will reward lucky clients who avail of its 24/7 Banking Channels (BPI Express Online, BPI Express Mobile, and BPI Express Phone) with dream vacations. You can be one of them.

Last year, BPI’s Get Out More promo gave away 7 all-expense paid trips for four to local tourist spots: Bohol, Davao, Boracay, Cebu, Legazpi, Iloilo, and Puerto Princesa. BPI 24/7 Banking gives you the chance to get farther away from your home, your city or your province. This year, the Get Out More 2 promo is even bigger because the lucky winners will be going Asian!

Up for grabs this time will be exciting places both here and abroad: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur (KL), and Boracay. Every winner also gets pocket money worth PhP 24,700. If you’ve been dreaming of traveling and seeing the world, you now have the chance to cross that off your bucket list.

And why not? Aside from seeing our own beautiful Philippines, visiting our Asian neighbors lets us see the cultural diversity and beauty of nature and tourist attractions of our neighbors. I’ve visited at least half of the places covered by the promo and I certainly won’t mind visiting the remaining places (if I win, cross my fingers).

Marvel at the cosmopolitan air of Shanghai with its ultramodern architecture mixed in with traditional Chinese sights; eat your way around Hong Kong’s popular food spots and shop till you drop; visit the centuries-old Korean palaces dotting Seoul’s metro and maybe sneak in a visit to KPop sites; enjoy the hospitality of Kuala Lumpur and its rich cultural mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian races; and bask in the sun at our very own Boracay, world known for its white sand beaches and clear waters.

Watch this short, exciting video and see where and what you can do in these places.

It’s really very easy to earn raffle entries. From August 1 to November 30, 2013, all new and existing BPI, BPI Family Savings Bank and BPI Direct Accountholders who use the services of BPI 24/7 Banking are qualified to earn raffle entries. Just pay your bills (utility bills, telco bills, and other kinds of bills) using any of the 24/7 banking channels of BPI and you automatically earn raffle entries. Each payment must be at least P50 and above and must have a unique reference/account number within that month.

For Boracay, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai, BPI will pick one (1) winner for each place who will get a free trip for two which includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations and pocket money. For Hong Kong, three (3) winners will be chosen, each one getting also a free trip for two (roundtrip airfare, accommodations and pocket money).

Get Your Starbucks Card: A Stored Value and Loyalty Card Rolled into One

(Updated Aug. 8, 2013)

IT”S HERE!

The Starbucks Card is finally here in the Philippines. Now you need not carry cash when buying beverages, food and Starbucks items because all that can be bought with the card. The Starbucks card is being introduced with a dual feature. It’s both a stored value card as well as a loyalty card which earns you rewards points every time you purchase a Starbucks handcrafted beverage, 250g of whole bean coffee, or 12-pack Starbucks VIA Ready Brew.

My Starbucks card

Here are answers to some of your questions:

How do I get the Starbucks Card?

Just go to any Starbucks branch nationwide. The card needs to have an initial load of P300 (cash, debit card, credit card) for it to be activated. Future reloads can be as low as P100 only and the card can have a maximum stored value of P10,000. Activation of the card can be done by visiting www.starbucks.ph/card.

Customers with activated cards immediately get a complimentary GRANDE handcrafted beverage (valid for 60 days from the time it is given) and will get a FREE slice of cake every year on their birthday AFTER the purchase of a handcrafted beverage (valid for 60 days from birth date).

How does it work as a loyalty card as well?

Stars are the “currency” of the Starbucks card. You earn 1 star with every purchase of any handcrafted beverage, 250g of whole bean coffee, or 12-pack Starbucks VIA Ready Brew. (Note: The type of star you earn depends on what you buy. If you purchase a beverage, you get a Beverage star; purchase whole bean coffee and get a Whole Bean star; and purchase Starbucks Via Ready Brew to get a Starbucks VIA star)

What can I redeem with my stars?

Here’s what you can redeem with your stars:

* 12 Beverage stars = Any Grande handcrafted beverage
* 10 Whole Bean stars = Any 250g of whole bean coffee
* 10 Starbucks Via stars = Any 12-pack Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew

Is there any expiration of my load or stars?

Your Starbucks card’s load has NO expiration because that represents your money; however, if the card maintains a ZERO balance for 3 years, the card will expire also after that period as it is presumed you no longer have any interest to top up the load. Stars expire every March 1 of the calendar year following the year when stars were earned. To illustrate, all stars earned from today, Aug. 7, 2013 till Dec. 31, 2013 expire March 1, 2014.

What happens if I lose my Starbucks card?

You are protected from card loss if you register your Starbucks card online. You can track your 90-day history, protect your balance and even register up to 10 Starbucks cards under 1 account. All pooled cards mean you only need to remember 1 amount for load and stars.

What else do I need to know?

I asked the Loyalty Manager of Starbucks if beverage purchases during the promo for the Christmas planners also count towards stars. The answer is YES!!!

One more thing. This Starbucks card is only good within the Philippines. Conversely, any Starbucks card you may own from another country CANNOT be used in the Philippines.

Promo from Aug. 7-9, 2013

Here’s good news for all those getting Starbucks cards. For 3 days (Aug. 7-9, 2013), load up your Starbucks card with P1,500 and you get a P1,800 value. That’s an EXTRA P300 value for you. Sulit!

Go get your Starbucks card now and find out how much more convenient it is to enjoy Starbucks food, beverages and items.

Bienvenue! Parisian sneaker Bensimon comes to the Philippines

C’est la vie!

For one night, we were transported from the streets of Manila to Paris, complete with French music, a French chef, a Parisian menu, and the ambience of a Paris flea market.

Parisians have a passion for life. When I think of a romantic place, there is no other city that comes to my mind other than Paris. I’ve been there, done the Eiffel Tower and Louvre tours, walked around Champs Elysees, Notre Dame and Arc d’ Triomphe. It is the French who tell us not to swallow our way through our meals but rather, to dawdle and savor each and every spoonful. It’s no wonder that in France, on our way to a local concert, we passed a group of Parisian diners in a restaurant and still saw them there AFTER the concert. Even now, I remember being introduced to a French guy at my school in the U.S. who promptly took the hand I proffered for a shake and instead, kissed it. Oooh la la!

It is memories like these that wafted through my mind as I sat listening to how a Parisian brand of sneakers is making its presence felt in the Philippines. Two brothers, Serge and Yves Bensimon, created the perfectly imperfect classic design for a line of sneakers they aptly called Bensimon. Inspired by travel, military and true Parisian fashion, the sneakers of Bensimon come in a wide array of styles, colors and prints — for men, women and even for kids.

Parisian chic oozes, whether they are in formal or casual garb. And the casual Parisian lifestyle is what Bensimon captured perfectly. Don’t look for perfection in a pair of Bensimon sneakers because you will find a lot of imperfections in it. On the outside, the part where the rubber meets the colored cloth shows unevenly colored areas, with whites showing very close to the seam meeting the rubber.

But it is this very imperfection that adds to the chic elegance of the sneaker. The look is laid back with a rugged feel. The underside shows that it is made not only for casual walks but also for tougher use.

But the real surprise for me was that despite its seemingly rugged look, the moment I wore my own pair of Bensimons, it felt really soft and pliable. I tried bending the sneakers and they actually could be bent so toe touched heel! I walked around in them, jumped, jogged a bit and walked some more. Super comfy! I think this will be a favorite active footwear!

Prices range from PhP 2,095-2,565 for the men’s and women’s lines and PhP 1,295 for the kids’ styles.

Bensimon sneakers will be available in Center of Gravity )Forbes Town, Burgos Circle and Centris Walk), Shoe Salon (Glorietta 3, Power Plant Mall Rockwell, Robinson’s Ermita, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Trinoma) and Shoe Thing (kids’ styles only: Bonifacio High Street, Eastwood Mall, Greenbelt 5).

BPI eCredit – a credit card for internet payments

Are you paranoid like me about disclosing your credit card number when purchasing stuff online?

If you are, you should be rightly so. There are so many horror stories out there on the internet about syndicates who are able to get hold of your credit card number and max out its credit limit with illegal purchases. Most times, when my kids want to purchase games online, I use PayPal and decline their requests if the merchant site requires a credit card number instead of PayPal.

Now my kids will be a lot happier. Here is something I just recently got in the mail from my bank, BPI (important card info were blurred out).

In the flyer that came with the card, the BPI eCredit card was described as “a companion card to your existing BPI Express Credit Mastercard. This card is for virtual and internet payments only…”

Why the 2013 Starbucks Planner deserves a second look

Over the years of seeing my planner-loving daughter collect her Starbucks planners, I’ve become familiar with the format. Most years, they were really targeted for the very young ones because of the artistic illustrations that covered the pages, the vivid colors, the variety of planner covers and the overall look and feel of it.

But I was pleasantly surprised when the 2013 Starbucks Planners launched with a different look. It looks like Starbucks just may get the best of both worlds (their very young fans and the young ONCE) because next year’s planners have some pretty cool features.

Here are some of the 2013 planner’s neat items that make it a collectible for the yuppie, the teeners and even prime time women like me:

* So much more room to write!!! The planners look more like the executive planners available, with lots of lines and more writing space. There are no artsy designs to cover pages. Each planner page looks more elegant, professional, and more practical for really jotting down stuff.

* Embossed leather covers in white, green and black – I found this year’s planner covers to be classier than the past ones, featuring a vertical embossed panel of what looks like stylized parols (Christmas Philippine lanterns)

* A magnetic bookmark in the shape of a Starbucks cup clips the page you want to mark, front and back. The magnet holds both ends in place, keeping the bookmark exactly where you want it.
* Thirteen (13) “kindness cards”, the equivalent of Starbucks coupons in the past, let you share a Starbucks treat with family and friends during specified periods of the year.

* Post-it notes scattered throughout the pages that you can give out to special people.

* Postcards – Every few months you’ll find a postcard stuck to the planner page that you can send off as well to someone special.

* Every few pages, Starbucks has inserted a “kindness suggestion” that you can do for someone. It is usually something very easy to do but would mean a lot to the other person.

To start collecting stickers for the planner, get a Starbucks Christmas traditions planner promo card )you have till Jan. 8, 2013 to do so). You’ll need seventeen (17) stickers all in all to be able to get the 2013 Starbucks Planner: nine (9) Christmas beverages plus eight (8) core beverages, except bottled drinks. One beverage gets you one sticker.

As part of the usual Starbucks tradition, every redeemed Starbucks Philippines 2013 Planner means a donation for the children of SparkHope – an early childhood care and development program in partnership with UNICEF.

My Lock&Lock Day

My water bottles, kids’ snack boxes and kitchen containers are all Lock&Lock. Not since Tupperware invaded my home have I loved another brand this much. The design of the water bottles are perfect because the grooves allow me to grasp pitchers without it slipping, even with wet hands. The various containers don’t just lock down on 2 opposite sides but on all 4 sides, making it virtually airtight and spill-proof.

So when Michelle told me there was a Lock&Lock event, my initial reaction was “There is an outlet aside from the malls where I can buy them???” Happy, happy, joy, joy! There indeed was!

Why do I pay particular attention to the kind of plastics brands I use? Safety. We know that there are more expensive plastics versus much cheaper ones. The cheaper ones are fine for storing non-edible items. But when it comes to storing food, I am very particular. Certain plastics are likely to leak chemicals into food. Lock&Lock products are made of eco-friendly PP and are free of Bisphenol A (more commonly called BPA), an endocrine disruptor.

In September 2011, OKO-TEST, a German independent consumer goods rating agency established in 1985, conducted tests on 15 airtight containers manufactured in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, China and other countries. The containers were judged on the basis of:

* Safety of material
* Airtightness
* Durability
* Ease of opening and closing lid
* Microwavable safety and convenience
* Ability to store heated food
* State of container after taking food out
* Discoloration resistance
* Ease and convenience of washing

Lock&Lock was the only Korean brand included in this test AND it received the highest rating, particularly in safety, airtightness and durability where it garnered the highest rating. And only Lock&Lock and Tupperware received the highest OKO-TEST rating. That’s my seal of safety right there. And while I still love Tupperware, which dominated the kitchen brands in our home as I was growing up, Lock&Lock is so much more affordable while retaining the same quality and safety features I look for in plastic, airtight containers.

Lock&Lock’s flagship store is located in Araneta Avenue. It’s not a huge place but on both sides of the walls were floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with everything Lock&Lock.

Here are displays of their containers and water bottles. There are actually more varieties in this place than you would find inside any mall. I know now where to go if I can’t find what I’m looking for in the mall’s home section.

If you thought Lock&Lock was all about plastic containers, you are in for a surprise just like I was.

Surprise #1: GLASSWARE!
Lock&Lock products are NOT all made of plastic. They have glass containers and bottles as well!
Boroseal glassware combined with the popular Lock&Lock plastic covers

These Boroseal glassware lines are the perfect “Kitchen to Table” items. Boroseal is based on the borosilicate glass technology that addresses heat resistance so that they can be used with microwave ovens and withstand boiling water as well as open flame. Boroseal glass is found in laboratory equipment, proof of its being chemically stable and not posing any hazardous substance leak.

To illustrate the difference between the Boroseal glass and tempered glass usually found in Pyrex products, the Lock&Lock team showed us two samples of broken glass: one from common tempered glass, the other from Boroseal glass. Tempered glass apparently shatters into big and tiny pieces (we locally refer to as bubog) so it is harder to clean up; Boroseal glass, on the other hand, shatters into big pieces.
Tempered glass, when shattered, has small glass pieces
Boroseal glass shatters but stays in big pieces (easy to clean up)

Right there and then, I wanted to buy glass water bottles and containers, except that I had no car that day and was afraid the ride home might make me drop my heavy load and shatter them.

Surprise #2: COOKWARE!

Their COOKPLUS cookware comes in 3 different lines – with each line having different features so as to fit whatever the needs of a household would be:

COOKPLUS Vitamin Pans – a colorful array of frying pans, casseroles, woks and saucepans. This line focuses on three E’s: eco-friendly, economical and easy cooking.

COOKPLUS Ceramic-coated Pans – Unlike Teflon-coated pans which, over time, can peel and bring risks of health-hazardous chemicals leaking into food, ceramic coating does away with that worry. The ceramic coating is made of Ecolon, which is not harmful to environment or body because its main ingredients consist of dirt, sand and rocks.

Those circular bumps prevent food from burning,
distribute heat more evenly and even conserve use of cooking oil
White version of ceramic pan

COOKPLUS Premium Grade Cookware – These are 18-10 stainless steel cooking pans and pots graded as one of the highest in quality and made with a longer lifespan. Pouring rims, ergonomic handles and a triple coating bottom structure for thermal dispersion.

Surprise #3: STORAGE BOXES, BINS & BASKETS!

Good news for those who have lots of stackable storage bins like me. Lock&Lock has them in different, bright and vibrant colors. They have stackables with and without covers, laundry baskets, cosmetic cases, rack baskets, and many more. I got myself a red soft basket. Here it is together with my haul for the day.

I thoroughly enjoyed my foray into Lock&Lock land that day and plan to go back to get the glassware I was not able to get the first time.

Amanda, Loving Life: a lifestyle show celebrating motherhood and womanhood

I’ve always known Amanda Griffin to be a popular VJ, host and supermodel but she disappeared from the celebrity scene some time back. At that time, it seemed that her face could be seen in almost every major event, show or happening around town. Then she suddenly disappeared from the scene.

Recently I saw her at an event, very pregnant, but still so gorgeous. Apparently, when she left the limelight, Amanda settled in Hong Kong with her husband David Jacob and their 2-year old son, Kieran. The once popular and sought-after, multi-talented celebrity had changed all her hats for motherhood.

Looking at her blooming while in that very delicate state, I conclude that Amanda really took on her new role like fish takes to water and became a hands-on mother. Being an entrepreneur at heart, Amanda used all her knowledge and resources and poured these into her very own website, Glam-O-Mamas (www.glamomamas.com), which became an online resource guide for young, newbie mothers.

But….she’s back!!!

Amanda has become the perfect host for a new lifestyle show where she shares her own personal journey, views and tips on balancing her role as mother, wife, career woman and modern urban dweller. She now hosts a show every Sunday, 7:30 PM on the Lifestyle Network.

Watch this teaser video:

Sun Shorts: A Preview from Sun Life

Consider this a heads-up!

Beginning July 25, 2012, Sun Life Financial and five Filipino filmmakers will showcase five (5) short films. The series is the Philippines’ installment of a regional film project called Experience the Sun, a collaboration of Sun Life Financial and film makers in Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines. The Philippine installment, entitled SUN SHORTS, features the way the chosen five filmmakers interpret how life is brighter under the Sun.

The filmmakers involved in Sun Shorts

I was fortunate to sit beside Sun Life’s lady President & CEO, Riza Mantaring. Actually, I saw her featured by Ces Drilon in Pipol. At that time, I was already very impressed by her achievements. At the event, I got to talk for some time with her.

Riza Mantaring, Sun Life President & CEO
I may be tooting the female psyche but having a woman at the helm oftentimes makes a difference in the creativity of an organization. Sun Life, as far as I know, is the first insurance company to break out of the conservative and traditional mold to try a bold and different venture like going into digital media for their campaigns.

Beginning July 25, 2012 and every few weeks after that, one Sun Shorts film (about 5 minutes max) will be featured in www.experiencethesun.com.ph.

Here’s a sneak peek (photos and teaser captions, in quotes, taken from Sun Life’s website).

1945

Life in a Day

“Most sought-after commercial director Jolly Feliciano departs from light-hearted themes to posit a lifetime of possibilities thru the eyes of a sick young boy whose hope burns brightly as the sun in ‘Life in a Day’.”

Oh My Goth!

“Director-playwright Chris Martinez (Here Comes the Bride, Kimmy Dora, 100) takes on the humorous side of the generational divide as an old woman’s faith and penchant for superstisions clashes with a young man’s cool confidence in a future well planned in ‘Oh My Goth!’.”

The Debt

“Up and coming filmmaker Nic Reyes follows the travails of a young man whose penchant for “quick fixes” led him into tight-hole situation and finds enlightenment and redemption from a surprising character in the action-packed ‘The Debt’.”

Sun Dance

“Multifarious artist Jerrold Tarog (Senior Year, Nino, Shake Rattle and Roll, Aswang) lets his “Sun Dance” pump up the beat of friendship that empowers three young women to tackle life’s ebbs and flows with grace and elegance.
